First thing – get a tripod, this is pretty much a must  for perfect infrared shots, and the infrared filter of your choice – I like the Hoya R72.

Next, take some time to plan your digital infrared photograph. Taking the time to do this upfront will help eliminate some of the uncertainties of digital infrared photography, which can result in only an ok photo, rather than a WOW! photo.

As always with these kinds of things, there is no one right way to achieve results. But these steps are the ones that I have had the most success with, using my D70 so far.

Image Type

For digital infrared photography I  really prefer to shoot in RAW mode. Although Nikons native  NEF format is so versatile, it just doesn’t come up to the high quality of RAW mode, and any imperfections can always be edited out using Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro.ISO

Good results can be achieved by increasing the ISO setting, but I’ve had the best results when I leave it at 200. Otherwise the noise is just too great – at least in my opinion. I also do a fair amount of post processing in Photo shop , so noise is a problem when working at higher magnifications. Remember, unlike infrared film, where the graininess is part of the look and feel of the image, digital infrared “grain” or noise really degrades your image. If you want to add the look of grainy film, do it in Photoshop, or other image-editing program.

White Balance

In my experience, setting a custom white balance is a key to GOOD Digital Infrared Photography with the Nikon d70. Because you are using a filter that blocks most “regular” light, the camera’s internal white balancing mechanism cannot provide you with an accurate measurement of the colour temperature of your environment. Since foliage reflects IR light, making it the brightest, whitest part of your photo, you’ll need to “calibrate” your D70 to let it know that visible light green is equal to infrared white.

There are a couple of ways to do this.

NUMBER 1: The simplest white balance method using the D70 is to open your menu, use the control button to flip down to the white balance setting, and change it to fluorescent +3. Since for infrared photography you’ll be most likely shooting in bright sunlight with a “red” filter, adding some false color correction in the camera, seems to give your final IR images more “punch.” I have also found the incandescent setting works too.

NUMBER 2: Another way to adjust white balance for digital infrared photography with the Nikon D70 is to take a photo of green grass at midday in full sun. Just the grass – no feet, no trees, no sky. Just point your camera at the grass looking straight down, and click! Now, in your menu, you’ll set the white balance from this photo. So, go to your menu, select white balance, >preset> use photo>select image> use your control dial to navigate to the image of the grass (hopefully it is the only one on your card to make it easy). Your menu should now say “this image>set.” Now you’re ready to shoot infrared!

Photography is an art form that can be easily learned.  It is a skill that is capable of making something that appeals to your senses, but technical know-how will insure that the results you get are exactly what you want.  Most people who simply take pictures and don’t understand the process end up with photos that are not clear and precise, are too dark, too light, etc.Obviously if you are interested in learning photography as a hobby or profession, you want to take the best pictures possible.  Even if you are just doing it for fun while on vacation, you want your images to be true to life in color and crystal clear.  While much of this is learned just by trial and error, there are little things you can do that will help improve the results you get.For example, some people think a flash will take care of everything, but this is not true.  In order for the flash to produce the best light in the photo, you need to be within a certain range of the subject.  If you are too far away, flash is not going to help all that much.  Also, consider where the sun is if you are taking photos during the day.  If it is behind your subject, you will not be able to see the details of a face as clearly, and the sun may cause a glare into your lens.A steady hand is another plus when it comes to photography.  It seems like the harder we try to be completely still, the harder it becomes.  Try shooting your subject at an equal level, so that you are not trying to get an angle shot from above or below the subject.  Fancy angles will come with time, but keeping things fairly basic is best when you first begin.You also want to avoid a confusing and congested look when shooting photos.  If you are at a park and there are dozens of people and all kinds of activity going on in the background, move to another location.  You want as little distraction going on as possible behind your subject, so that they can be the focus of the picture.  Having a mountain or the ocean in the background is idea, because you will have a solid color for the most part and no moving activity going on.No matter the reason for doing it, photography is fun, especially when you see results that are pleasing.  Keep practicing and you will gradually get better.  Of course if you want to learn more now, there are plenty of books, courses and guides you can find online to speed things up!

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have fun capturing great pics while getting rewarded with prizes from winning photography contests? And if one is starting out as a professional or freelance photographer, winning photography contests will certainly help boost your credentials and portfolio too. In normal economic times, it is easy to regularly find photo contests listed on magazines, newspapers, facebook, posters, websites, websites, blogs, etc. Organisers and sponsors could be distributors of camera equipment, photography clubs, universities, book publishers, community clubs, etc. The prizes that are commonly offered include cash, cameras, product vouchers, lenses, trophies, exhibition opportunities and even special overseas assignments. Some photographers are contest junkies while others find them a waste of time, feeling they will never win. The truth is that some contests provide a reasonable chance at winning prizes or money or attention(!), especially if you have an eye for regularly producing pretty nice photos. This advice will help boost your chances of winning. Make a plan for the exact type of competitions you wish to focus on based on what you are good at. For example, if you do great macro closeup photography of insects, you might wish to concentrate on nature photography contests. Look for contests that are not very publicized or are restricted to certain geographical regions or age groups (e.g. youth/student category). Also, aim for contests that offer multiple prizes beyond just the Top 3 (e.g. merit, consolation, honorable mentions) to further increase your chances of winning. Draw up a schedule with the various contest closing dates, and going through, weeks ahead, which pictures to submit to which contests. A proper archival system with appropriate tagging and categorisation will ease your troubles in finding the images in the long run. Also, note that most contest rules have a clause disallowing multiple submission of the same picture to other contests. Examine the regulations carefully for the contests you wish to enter. It is worth a couple of minutes to ensure that your entry is not technically disqualified. Check if the rules require a certain image file size (in pixels or KB), aspect ratio, file type (Jpeg or Tiff), print size (8R vs 8RS), etc. Don’t leave it too late to send in your entries – send out at least a week prior to the closing date. Reflect on why you want to enter contests and solidify your goals in writing. Often the goal is the prize money, but in some cases it is fame and personal glory. Regardless, it is necessary to have a mental attitude that will keep you motivated and visualizing your goals. Imagining life as a winner can make a difference.
